The new edition of this very standard reference work has been prepared after years of painstaking research. The many words and phrases that called for judicial determination of their meaning in the various cases decided the Supreme Court since 1950 have been extracted after carefully researching the case-law of the last 62 years as reported in all major law reports. These cases arose either in a non-statutory context or under the Constitution of India or under any Central or State statute. 

Such judicial exposition though given in a particular set of facts and circumstances under a particular statute yet elaborates upon the meaning of that word or phrase and coming from the Supreme Court of India constitutes the law of the land binding on all courts within the territory of India. So only if the other statute in which that word or phrase occurs be irreconcilable or unrelated, the judicial expositions given by the Supreme Court will be most relevant. 

A complete referencer, it not only includes words and phrases, but also maxims and doctrines that came up for interpretation and definition before the Supreme Court. Every effort has been made to enrich the work. Case-law has been covered up to July 2012.
