The Common Law authored by Robert W. Chambers, an American artist and fiction writer, best known for his book of short stories entitled The King in Yellow, published in 1895. Chambers has a style of writing that is often peculiar in word choice and his perspective on social situations ranges from relatively enlightened to snobbish close-mindedness. A window into another time in American culture, early 1900's.
The book begins with a young woman (Valerie) asking a successful upper class artist (Louis) whether he needs a model. it gives an account of their love for each other and the sacrifices they are willing to make.
